Update 2/22/22:

The CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program helps eligible Californians at highest risk of eviction and lowest income get money for rent and utilities. To ensure rental protections continue to help those who need it most, the state is prioritizing Californians most at risk of eviction and homelessness—those earning extremely low to no income.

  • While we know rent relief is an urgent issue for all applicants, the program is prioritizing those who are at highest risk of eviction and lowest income.
  • Because the rent relief dollars come from the federal government, the state of California is following the U.S. Departmentof Treasury’s guidelines for disbursing funds.
  • The state of California will continue to apply for additional funds from the U.S. Department of Treasury to help even more Californians get the financial assistance they need. Regardless of whether or not you are in the highest priority group for rent relief, completing an application for the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program may reduce your risk of eviction.
  • If you’ve received an eviction notice, it’s important you act quickly. Check your eligibility and apply for rent relief at HousingIsKey.com or by calling 833-430-2122 within 15 days of receiving a notice from your landlord. You can also call a bilingual NCO Case Manager today at (707) 456-7989 for local assistance with your application.
  • Your landlord can’t legally evict you for non-payment of COVID-related debt without also applying for the program, so it’s important to let your landlord know as soon as you submit your application (or intend to).
  • Legal aid resources are available to support tenants navigating available protections. Low-or no-cost legal help is available through www.lawhelpca.org and/or the Tenant Resources page on HousingIsKey.com.

North Coast Opportunities is partnering with the State of California to help with eligibility questions and applications for rent relief for Lake & Mendocino Counties

Income eligible renters who have experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19 and have past due rent, or landlords who have experienced a loss in income because of unpaid rent, may be eligible to get financial assistance now through the State of California COVID-19 Rent Relief program, also known as Housing Is Key.

The California COVID-19 Rent Relief program was created by the COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act, with eviction protections signed into law by Governor Newsom on January 29. Funding comes from the $2.6 billion in federal emergency rental assistance program to states and local jurisdictions.

Both renters and landlords in Lake or Mendocino Counties can apply for California COVID-19 Rent Relief. If landlords choose to participate, they will receive 100 percent of an eligible tenant’s unpaid rent for the period of April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021 and 100 percent of their future rent of utilities.

Applications from landlords or renters must include all required information and eligibility verification items to be processed. NCO’s bilingual Disaster Case Managers will be available to help applicants complete their online applications. Interested applicants can call NCO at (707) 456-7989 to schedule an appointment to complete an application.

For more information on program eligibility, required application information, and to start the application process, visit HousingIsKey.com or call 833-430-2122.
