. . .The Early Head Start Infant/Toddler Center operates year-round Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The program is designed to meet the needs of families who need six or more hours of care per day. Services are free of charge for qualified families. Some families pay a low share of cost. To qualify parents must be working, actively seeking employment, or enrolled in school or work training. Families must also meet state income eligibility guidelines. At Early Head Start, each infant and toddler has his/her own primary caregiver who tracks and supports development of cognitive, language, gross motor, social and self help skills. Parents of children enrolled at Early Head Start have great things to say about the program, "The socialization is great," EHS parent Sarah Brown says. "They have an early start before preschool. The staff is real friendly and professional, but also silly." Mike and Liz Gardner believe EHS has helped their daughter gain confidence in herself. "The staff is well-educated, loving, and caring," they said. "I trust them with my children. We have recommended the center to all our friends." "The Early Head Start staff make families feel welcome," said Amanda Sizemore, another parent, "comfortable, and like part of the group. Both of my children have blossomed socially. They have really learned how to be with other children." Families of children enrolled at Early Head Start also receive support from the program. Mary Williams, whose grandson attended EHS said, "I would not have been able to even get my own health together if not for EHS." Daniel Waring said Early Head Start did "a wonderful job with supporting growth and development of both my sons (and provided) personal support not available through other child care services." At age 3, children leaving Early Head Start are given priority for enrollment at Head Start, which serves 3- and 4- year-olds until they transition into kindergarten. Willits Head Start offers full or half-day preschool classes at no charge to qualified families. Eligibility is based on family income. Over income spaces are available and children with special needs are considered for enrollment regardless of income. Children in foster care placements are income-eligible. . . -The Willits News
